Among various markers for the staining of the highly complex perineuronal nets (PNs) of the extracellular matrix sheep-anti-neurocan (R&D Systems; AF 5800) reveals a considerable subpopulation of PNs. This immunoreagent can be applied for instance combined with rabbit-anti-aggrecan and biotinylated Wisteria floribunda agglutinin (WFA) known as classical net markers. Immunoreactivity for the chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (CSPG) neurocan is detectable not only in PNs but also in surrounding neuropil as shown in forebrain sections from mice after experimental stroke (Härtig et al 2016, Neuroscience, Fig. 6; Härtig et al 2017, Front Integr Neurosci 2017, Fig. 8)
This antibody is an outstanding immunohistochemical marker.
