Inhibitory presynapses can be easily revealed with primary antibodies directed against the vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT) also known as vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter (VIAAT). A versatile marker for instance in the forebrain of mice is guinea pig-anti-VGAT (Synaptic Systems, Göttingen, 131004, recognizing the N-terminus). Altered axonal endings of inhibitory neurons were detected after experimentally induced stroke (Michalski et al 2013 Neuroscience, Figs 5 and 7).
